Jonathan Washington Killed in Suspected DWI Crash on US-80 [Sunnyvale, TX]

Sunnyvale, TX (December 4, 2024) On Sunday morning, 34-year-old Jonathan Washington was killed after a horrific wrong-way crash on US-80.

According to authorities, the fatal collision happened at about 2 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of US-80 near Lawson Road.

Reports say that the tragic wrong-way collision claimed the life of Jonathan D. Washington early Sunday morning.

Authorities say that 22-year-old Edgar Cortez reportedly drove his pickup truck westbound in the eastbound lanes of US-80 near Lawson Road while intoxicated. His vehicle collided head-on with Washington’s Dodge Challenger around 2 a.m.

Officials say that Washington, a beloved youth football coach in Mesquite and an employee at Baylor Dallas, was returning home to Forney from a part-time job when the fatal crash occurred.

Cortez faces charges of intoxication manslaughter and driving while intoxicated. He is currently held at the Mesquite city jail on a $252,000 bond.

Funeral arrangements for Washington are pending, as friends, family, and the community come together to honor his legacy.
