Crash Involving 2 Cars in Phoenix Kills 18-Year-Old Man and Fetus
PHOENIX, AZ (December 26, 2019) – A young man and a fetus were killed Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash on 35th Avenue, in Phoenix.
The fatal incident happened around 11:15 a.m., on the corner 35th Avenue and Bell Road. Emergency Responders arrived to the area shortly after receiving multiple dispatch calls.
According to reports, a black Dodge Avenger was traveling west on 35th Avenue at high speeds. Then, a Ford Mustang turned left from eastbound Bell Road onto northbound 35th Avenue when the two vehicles collided.
The impact caused the Dodge to spin out, consequently traveling hundreds of feet. The Dodge then hit the curb along with four pedestrians on the sidewalk.
Phoenix police say an 18-year-old man by the name of Jonathan Marroquin, jumped in front of the pregnant teenager, likely saving her life.
Marooquin was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment of life-threatening injuries. However, due to the impact of the collision, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The 15-year-old female, who was 31 weeks pregnant, lost her baby and was injured in the crash. However, there has been no update on her current condition.
Moreover, a 51-year-old male victim suffered a minor foot injury and was eventually released at the scene.
Both the 25-year-old driver of the Dodge and the 63-year-old driver of the Mustang remained on scene. Both drivers escaped serious injury, according to medics on scene.
Impairment did not appear to be a factor, police said. However, the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Our deepest condolences are with the families and friends of Jonathan Marroquin and the unborn fetus.
