Tow Truck Driver Killed in Collision with Big Rig near Haugen-Lehmann Way
CABAZON, CA (August 7, 2018) – A tow truck driver was killed Tuesday morning after he was struck by a big rig on Interstate 10. The deceased victim was later identified as 50-year-old Cabazon resident, Jon Israel.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened shortly after 9:00 AM, near Haugen-Lehmann Way. For unknown reasons, Israel parked his flatbed tow truck and exited the vehicle along the north side of Interstate 10.
As he was reentering the tow truck, a 2012 Volvo truck driver allowed his vehicle to drift onto the north shoulder and struck the victim. The impact threw Israel from the side of his truck onto the slow lane. A passing motorist stopped at the scene and pulled Israel from the traffic lanes.
Cal Fire later arrived to render aid to the injured tow truck driver. Unfortunately, Israel succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the Volvo driver, 52-year-old Marco Rodriguez of Riverside, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Alcohol and drugs were ruled out as possible contributing factors in the fatal crash. The big rig is undergoing a mechanical inspection at the CHP’s Desert Hills Inspection Facility. No further details have been provided to the public at this time.
