65-Year-Old Pilot Killed and Woman Hospitalized in Airport Fire at 13308 Nevada City Avenue
GRASS VALLEY, CA (April 18, 2018) – A tenured pilot and flight instructor was killed in an airport fire along Nevada City Avenue on Wednesday morning.
According to John Sunde, the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District battalion chief, the department received a call at around 8:36 AM about a fire in a hangar with multiple people trapped inside.
A second alarm was raised and crews arrived at the site to find smoke coming from the building. Multiple fire departments responded to the hangar, that was located just off of Loma Rica Drive.
Frefighters entered the hangar, quickly found John Pichitino and pulled him from the building. Paramedics attempted to perform CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman and a man were able to escape the burning building but the woman suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation.
Authorities are still investigating the fatal incident to determine what caused the fire.
