Former Artesia Mayor Fatally Injured in Motorcycle Crash near Old Walnut Road
OJAI, CA (June 15, 2018) – A man was killed Friday morning and another was left injured following a collision between a motorcycle and a sedan near Old Walnut Road. 54-year-old John Martins of Artesia, was later identified as the casualty in this incident.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision was reported shortly after 8:20 AM in the 9000 block of Highway 150.
A group of eight motorcyclists was heading westbound in a line on the 150 when they attempted to navigate a curve in the roadway. For unknown reasons, Martins was unable to complete the curve and entered the eastbound lane, where his motorcycle collided with a sedan.
Ventura Fire Department responded to the scene and found Martins with severe injuries. A Ventura County air unit was requested but later canceled because of weather conditions. Martins was transported to the Ventura County Medical Center by ambulance and was pronounced dead shortly before 9:40 AM. Another motorcyclist, a 61-year-old Whitter man, was also hospitalized after suffering minor injuries. His name was not immediately available.
The driver of the sedan stopped at the scene and cooperated with the investigators. Authorities ruled out alcohol and drugs as possible factors in the accident. No additional information has been disclosed to the public at this time.
Sweet Law offers our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of John Martins. The former mayor of Artesia will be remembered as a great leader and a man with a big heart. May he rest in peace.
