Matthew Keith Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash on Highway 120 in Oakdale
OAKDALE, CA (February 9, 2020) – A man was struck and killed by a drunk driver who left the scene Sunday night in Oakdale.
The fatal incident happened around 6:45 p.m. on Highway 120 near Valley Home Road.
According to the CHP, a 61-year-old John Hughes was walking north near the fog line on the east side of the highway when a Chevrolet pickup truck hit him.
First responders started CPR on Hughes and transported him to Oak Valley Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 28-year-old Matthew Keith, fled the scene but later called police after hearing about the incident on social media.
When officers arrived at Keith’s home, he explained to them that he hit an unknown object.
The CHP determined that Keith was under the influence of alcohol. They arrested him on suspicion of DUI causing injury or death.
Authorities said more investigation is needed to determine whether he will also face charges of hit-and-run.
