Bicyclist Joe Shami Hit by Car in Lafayette Accident

 
LAFAYETTE, CA (April 14, 2021) – Tuesday morning, Joe Shami, 86, sustained injuries in a bicycle crash on Pleasant Hill Road near Olympic Boulevard.
 
According to Lafayette Police, the collision between a vehicle and a bicyclist happened at around 7:18 a.m.
 
Moreover, it occurred on Pleasant Hill Road in the area of the Olympic Boulevard roundabout.
 
Furthermore, the crash closed the road, and traffic was diverted around the area.
 
Authorities asked everyone to avoid the area and to find alternate routes.
 
Apparently, the driver who struck the bicyclist cooperated with officers, and is participating in the investigation, which is still ongoing.
 
Later reports revealed that the deceased was Joe Shami, an avid bicyclist well known and loved in the community.
 
The 86-year-old bicyclist still rode hundreds of miles a week. Indeed, he also advocated for sharing the road.
 
Friends of Mr. Shami said he was known for riding up Mount Diablo on his bike weekly over the past decade.
