64-Year-Old Truck Driver Airlifted after Two-Vehicle Collision near Hubbard Avenue

NEW CUYAMA, CA (May 20, 2018) – Two people were killed Sunday afternoon after a collision on Highway 166 between a truck and a car. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office later identified the deceased victims as 52-year-old Jimmy Riley of Solvang and 34-year-old Ronamarie Molon of Santa Maria.

As per CHP reports, the collision occurred just after 4 PM near Hubbard Avenue. A 2016 Honda Civic, driven by Riley, was heading east on the highway. At the same time, a Freightliner tractor pulling a tanker trailer was heading in the opposite direction.

For unknown reasons, the Civic crossed over to the westbound lanes directly into the path of the westbound truck. The unidentified 64-year-old truck driver was unable to avoid the oncoming Civic and the two vehicles collided head-on.

Riley and his passenger, Molon, received blunt force trauma injuries from the collision and were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities noted that both Civic occupants were not secured in a seatbelt at the time of the accident, and Molon was thrown from the vehicle onto the roadway. Meanwhile, the truck driver sustained minor injuries and complained of pain in the abdominal area. He was airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment.

Investigators are working on determining Riley’s sobriety at the time of the collision and the cause for suddenly crossing over to the westbound lanes. No additional information has been released at this time.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Jimmy Riley and Ronamarie Molon. Wishing them strength and courage during this difficult time. May Jimmy and Ronamarie rest in peace.
