Bicyclist Fatally Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver at Branford Street and Arleta Avenue

ARLETA, CA (January 19, 2020) – A bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash Sunday evening in the Arleta neighborhood.

The fatal crash happened around 7:00 p.m. on Branford Street, just west of Arleta Avenue.

According to a police report, a male bicyclist was crossing Branford Street bridge when a silver Mercedes-Benz sedan struck him. The impact launched the victim’s body about 140 feet and his bicycle tumbled into the river wash below.

Witnesses told investigators the driver sped into the left lane to get around a slower vehicle. That was when the Mercedes hit Urbina.

The other driver stopped and found the victim dead in the roadway. By the time the driver looked up to see where the Mercedes was, the vehicle had sped away.

Detectives on Monday scoured the area for more witnesses and security cameras that may have captured the crash. But the area was dark when the crash occurred, and that the suspect vehicle may be difficult to make out in any video.

Family members identified the bicyclist as 36-year-old Jesus Urbina.

The victim’s wife told CBSLA that Urbina was bringing water to his homeless friends when he was hit.

Police are still on the look-out for the suspect. A reward of up to $25,000 is available for information leading to an arrest.

No words can mend the broken hearts and sorrow felt during this delicate moment. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jesus Urbina.

If you have a loved one who has been a victim of a wrongful death accident, you have the right to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault party who has evidently neglected the safety of others on the road. The claim will include a recompense for the funeral costs, loss of future income and loss of love and companionship. No monetary amount can replace the loss of a loved one, however, it is important that the surviving family is aware of their legal rights.
