85-Year-Old Man Killed in Collision with Construction Truck on Highway 70
SAFFORD, AZ (August 25, 2019) – Authorities identified 85-year-old Jesus Pena as the driver killed in a crash on Highway 70, early Sunday morning.
According to the Safford Police Department, the incident happened in the 100 block of East Highway 70, at about 6:30 AM. A construction crew, driving three separate vehicles, were on their way to a job site. One of the trucks stalled out after turning near 1st Avenue. Then, the larger truck pulled up behind it with hazard lights activated.
The third truck pulled in front to tow the stalled truck. A short time later, an eastbound passenger vehicle crashed into the rear of the stalled truck.
One of the construction crew members checked Pena, who was not wearing a seatbelt, for a pulse before calling 911. The 911 operator advised the caller to extricate Pena from the vehicle and begin chest compressions. Then, a Safford Police officer arrived and took over the procedure.
A LifeLine ambulance arrived and rushed Pena to Mount Graham Regional Medical Center. Unfortunately, he succumbed to traumatic chest injuries and died at 7:06 AM.
The Safford Police Department continues to investigate the cause of the fatal crash. Authorities also noted that Pena’s seatbelt was locked up and could not be moved. Investigators will release additional information once it becomes available.
