Jesus Arias Arrested, Man Fatally Injured in Lakewood Alleged DUI Accident
LAKEWOOD, CA (April 2, 2019) – A man in a wheelchair died while crossing the street in Long Beach when a drunk driver struck him on Thursday, March 28.
The driver drove away and then returned to the scene after a witness followed him. Mike Da Veiga, a motorcyclist, said that he’s the one who chased after the driver and urged him to go back.
The collision happened at about 8 p.m. when a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee struck the man at Bellflower Boulevard and Harvey Way near Lakewood High School, police stated.
Paramedics rushed the injured man to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
Police confirmed that the driver left the scene and returned a short time later. However, they’re trying to know if the man in a wheelchair crossed against a red light.
Investigators took the driver to the Downtown police station after showing impairment in a field sobriety test, Long Beach police Lt. Robert Woods said.
They arrested him on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run. Officers held him in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to police.
Police identified the driver as 37-year-old Jesus Jorge Arias, of Lakewood.
Authorities haven not yet released the name of the man in the wheelchair, but they said he was 29 years old.
