Jessica Herrera Killed; Richard Herrera and Lucia Gomez Injured in Head-On DUI Crash on Highway 198 near 12th Avenue
HANFORD, CA (February 18, 2018) – A fatal car crash took place when an intoxicated driver was going the wrong-way and crashed into a car on Highway 198 east of 12th Avenue, on Sunday morning around 1:48 AM.
The alleged intoxicated driver, 22-year-old Lucia Gomez of Visalia, was driving a Hyundai Elantra west on the eastbound side of Highway 198. According to reports, she was traveling at speeds over 90 miles per hour, and swerving in and out of lanes.
Jessica Herrera, 25, was driving in a 2015 Toyota Rav4 east on 198 behind a car, when that vehicle suddenly swerved out of the lane to avoid the oncoming Hyundai. The wrong-way car crashed into the Rav4 head-on at high speeds.
Jessica suffered major injuries and was transported to the Adventist Medical Center in Hanford, where she was later pronounced dead. Passenger in the Rav4, 28-year-old Richard Herrera of Selma, was hospitalized for minor injuries. Gomez was critically injured and taken to the Kaweah Delta Medical Center in Visalia.
The wrong-way driver was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. It has to still be confirmed that Gomez was under the influence during the time of the accident. No other information has been released at this time.
