Police Pursuit Ends in Fatal Crash on East 3rd Street and Temple Avenue
LONG BEACH, CA (May 7, 2019) – An unidentified woman and five dogs were killed after a pursuit crash Tuesday morning, in Long Beach.
To begin, officers spotted a stolen white van around 11:30 a.m., near the intersection of East Broadway and Alamitos Avenue. Authorities then quickly attempted to perform a traffic stop. Next, the driver of the van tried to flee, consequently leading to a brief police pursuit.
The van eventually plowed into a woman’s vehicle near the intersection of East 3rd Street and Temple Avenue. First responders immediately called the paramedics for needed medical attention.
Upon arrival, rescuers freed the woman from the wreckage and rushed her to nearby hospital for further treatment. She was reportedly suffering from life-threatening injuries as a result of the impact. Later, she succumbed to her injuries in the hospital due to the impact of the collision.
Family and friends identified the victim as Jessica Bingaman. She was a single mom who worked as a local dog-sitter and lived nearby.
Furthermore, there were six dogs inside Bingaman’s car at the time. Four of them were killed in the crash and two others were transported to a vet, where a fifth was pronounced dead due to the impact of the collision.
The violent crashed caused the vehicle’s tire and axle to fly across the street and break a concrete wall. Three parked vehicles identified as a minivan, a truck, and a sedan were also damaged amidst the accident.
Police identified the suspect as 43-year-old Javier Oliverez of Los Angeles. He is a parolee and known gang member. He was also wanted on a warrant for robbery.
Oliverez was booked on suspicion of evading a police officer, felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter upon release from the hospital. He is currently being held at the Long Beach Jail with no bail.
The surrounding area was closed off for a brief time while crews worked to clean the scene. Police are still currently investigating the incident to determine further details. More information will eventually be released once available.
