Rhome Traffic Accident Kills Motorcyclist

Rhome, TX (March 12, 2023) – On Friday morning, Jerry Wayne Newton, 55, sustained fatal injuries following a US 287 hit-and-run crash.

Rhome Police Chief Eric Debus said the suspect driver forced Newton past the shoulder into the grassy median, where he lost control and crashed. 

“Got into some sort of road rage incident with Mr. Newton, who was on his 2014 Harley Davidson,” Debus stated.

“Mr. Newton and the motorcycle attempted to race away and get away from the truck, but the truck continued to pursue him and chase him down, and then actually swerved toward him several times,” Debus added.

The officer said Newton was wearing a helmet during the accident and added that the victim was not the aggressor.

The suspect’s vehicle is a dark or silver colored pickup truck with a white trailer that is orange on the bottom with a black tarp covering a water tank.

Similarly, the authorities are also searching for a second vehicle, a black truck that was also hauling heavy equipment, possibly traveling with the suspect vehicle.

Jerry Wayne Newton leaves behind a wife, three sons, and grandchildren.
