One Dead and One Injured in Possible DUI Collision on I-5 Near 805 Merge
SORRENTO VALLEY, CA (February 17, 2018) – A wrong-way collision occurred on Interstate 5 near the 805 Freeway merge, just north of Carmel Mountain Road, on Saturday morning.
Around 3:50 AM, a 1997 red Honda sedan, driven by 22-year-old Jeremiah Nelson Gunry of San Diego, was traveling south on the northbound I-5. A 2012 white Toyota pickup truck, driven by ex-Marine Luis Maldonado, approached the area and the Honda crashed into him head-on.
Gunry was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, and Maldonado suffered critical injuries and was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. He is currently undergoing multiple medical procedures, according to a close friend.
Maldonado’s service dog, Jax, was also injured in the collision. He was taken to an animal hospital in critical condition, but is expected to make it.
The pickup truck was carrying motorcycles in its bed, which had skewed across the road, along with debris. Officials temporarily shut down traffic in the area, while authorities investigated and the wreckage was cleaned up.
A GoFundMe page was setup to help Maldonado’s family with medical expenses.
Condolences to the family and friends of Jeremiah Nelson Gunry.
