Amarillo Police Sgt. Jay Claxton Killed in Traffic Accident on Buccola Avenue [Amarillo, TX]

Amarillo, TX (May 16, 2023) – On Mother’s Day, Amarillo police, Sgt. Jay Claxton was killed in a traffic accident on Buccola Avenue.

It was about  8 p.m. when Claxton was working on a boat that was parked on Buccola Avenue.

Suddenly, an SUV driven by a 19-year-old girl struck the boat.

Claxton got pinned under the boat’s trailer. Unfortunately, he sustained fatal injuries from the accident.

“Jay has long served this agency with distinction and if you knew Jay he was your friend,” said Sheriff Christopher Forbis. “Jay was the type of person that would show up any time of the day or night if you needed help.”

Claxton joined the Randall County Sheriff’s Office in July 2003.

In the meantime, officers are investigating the fatal accident.
