1 Dead in Joshua Tree Auto Accident on Twentynine Palms Highway
JOSHUA TREE, CA (January 15, 2024) – Wednesday night, a tragic hit-and-run crash on Twentynine Palms Highway led to the arrest of Javious Vance.
32-year-old Vance of Yucca Valley drove a 2014 Dodge Challenger at a high speed, going east on the highway. As he traveled in the right lane, east of El Rey Avenue, he rear-ended 27-year-old Michelle Castillo driving a 2011 Chevrolet Spark at a slow speed.
The impact heavily damaged both cars. Meanwhile, Vance fled the scene and was not immediately found.
Castillo’s passenger was transported to Hi-Desert Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. His identity remained undisclosed. Meanwhile, Castillo’s other passenger, 53-year-old June Castillo of Twentynine Palms, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center.
Furthermore, the authorities identified Vance as the driver of the Dodge. By Jan. 11, he came to the CHP’s Morongo Basin office and was detained on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run.
He’s currently being held at the West Valley Detention Center on $60,000 bail. He is also facing three unrelated misdemeanor charges from May 2022: driving under the influence, DUI with a blood-alcohol level of .08% or more, and driving while his license was suspended for DUI.
Furthermore, the CHP urged anyone with information about Wednesday’s crash to contact the Morongo Basin office at (760) 366-3707.
At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.
Due to the limited information available, the authorities continued to investigate the crash.
