Injuries Reported in Phoenix Auto Accident on Interstate 8 and Gila Bend
PHOENIX, AZ (August 13, 2024) – Thursday last week, Jared Roy Jones was arrested after a crash on Interstate 8 and Gila Bend.
The incident happened around 8:15 as a DPS trooper conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 8, west of Gila Bend when he noticed an SUV driving west in the eastbound lanes.
The state trooper attempted to catch up to an SUV and soon came upon a crash involving the SUV and two other vehicles. Reports said that the SUV had collided with a Chevrolet Silverado carrying five people, causing the truck to overturn and strike a Kia SUV that also held five occupants. In total, five individuals, including four children, were transported to hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to severe.
According to court documents, the trooper found the suspected wrong-way driver, 24-year-old Jones, standing next to the SUV. He was the sole occupant of his vehicle.
Jones allegedly confessed to the trooper that he was intoxicated, rating himself a 9 out of 10 on a scale where 10 signifies being extremely drunk. He admitted to consuming four BuzzBallz cocktails in the parking lot of a convenience store near 51st Avenue and Indian School Road in Phoenix before setting off for the Navajo Nation. However, he drove in the opposite direction and found himself on I-8.
Jones was taken to a hospital, where a blood test revealed a BAC of .222, more than twice the legal limit. Due to being over 0.15, this level is categorized as an extreme DUI. Among those injured in the crash, one individual is reportedly being treated for multiple brain bleeds in the ICU, while the others sustained less serious injuries.
Jones was later booked into Maricopa County jail on multiple charges, including 10 counts of aggravated assault, 10 counts of endangerment, two counts of criminal damage, one count of aggravated DUI, and one count of aggravated assault causing serious physical injury.
