Janeth Balianmachain and Salvador Villacruz Hurt in Highway 1 Head-on Collision [Santa Cruz, CA]

Santa Cruz, CA (September 21, 2024) On Friday morning, 44-year-old Janeth Balianmachain and 27-year-old Salvador Villacruz were hurt after a head-on collision on Highway 1.

According to the CHP, the head-on collision on Highway 1 near Struve Road happened around 4:20 a.m.

Reports say that the crash in Moss Landing prompted a full lane closure in both directions.

Officials say that the collision involved a silver Lexus traveling southbound that crossed into the northbound lane, colliding head-on with a black Honda.

The Lexus, driven by 24-year-old Jimmy Cruz from Salinas, crossed a solid double yellow line and struck the Honda, driven by Balianmachain from Marina. Following the crash, Cruz exited his vehicle and was struck by a white Acura driven by Villacruz from Moss Landing.

Cruz sustained major injuries, was transported to Natividad Medical Center, and later arrested for DUI.

Balianmachain was also transported to a hospital in Santa Cruz County, while Villacruz was taken to Natividad Medical Center for treatment.

Highway 1 was closed for several hours as CHP officers investigated the accident. Caltrans assisted with rerouting traffic through Struve Road, and the highway was reopened around 8:10 a.m.

CHP Monterey is investigating the head-on collision on Highway 1 and has not released further details at this time.
