James Witt and Others Injured in Head-On Collision on Highway 503 [Woodland, WA]

Officers Arrest Darrell Heck of Tacoma in Suspected Woodland DUI Crash

Woodland, WA (August 14, 2022) – On Saturday, James Witt, 42, of Woodland, and others, sustained injuries in a head-on collision on Highway 503.

The traffic incident happened at about 8:30 p.m. west of the Lewis River Golf Course.

According to the investigators, a 42-year-old Tacoma man, Darrell Heck was driving a red Mitsubishi SUV. Apparently, he illegally tried to pass a slower vehicle and hit an oncoming 2022 Ram 2500 pickup driven by Witt.

The paramedics rushed Vernesha Heck, 41, and the three children in the SUV, ages, 16, 14, and 12, to various hospitals. They also took the fourth child to a hospital as a precaution. Officers say only some of them wore seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Moreover, James Witt sustained injuries but did not go to the hospital.

The rescuers also took 41-year-old April Witt to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center with injuries.

Luckily, the two children in the Witt pickup, ages 11 and 3, did not sustain injuries from the collision. All of them were wearing seatbelts during the accident.

Furthermore, the authorities arrested Darrell Heck on suspicion of vehicular assault. Officers say that a report was forwarded to prosecutors.

Investigating officers consider drugs or alcohol as factors in the incident. Though, they are still investigating the Woodland DUI crash.

Both the SUV and the pickup were totaled from the crash scene.

It is important always to pay attention to your surroundings whenever driving. This, abiding by all the driving laws, and following all the road signs are simple ways to practice defensive driving. Defensive driving can lessen the chance of serious road accidents happening.
