James Watts of Oregon Injured in Deadly Plane Crash Near Gainesville Municipal Airport [Gainesville, TX]

Gainesville, TX (June 13, 2024) – Bailey Maldonado, 27, of Grand Prairie, was killed and James Watts, 26, of Oregon, was injured in a plane crash near Gainesville Municipal Airport Tuesday night.

The single-engine Cessna 172R left the Denton Enterprise Airport at about 7:48 p.m. and was expected to land at the Gainesville Municipal Airport at about 8:44 p.m.

However, the plane crashed killing its female instructor pilot, Bailey Maldonado, at the scene.

The male student co-pilot, James Watts, was flown to Medical City Denton with serious injuries.

Troopers said Maldonado and Watts were doing an instructional flight when the crash happened.

The U.S. Aviation Academy trains at the Denton Enterprise Airport and the aircraft is owned by Wings Over Texas Holdings LLC.

NTSB will investigate the cause of the plane crash.
