1 Dead in Los Banos Car Accident on 5 Freeway
LOS BANOS, CA (January 10, 2020) – A 24-year-old Hanford man died in a car accident on 5 Freeway on January 8.
The Merced County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Jamee Chargualaf.
At 12:36 a.m., a 54-year-old Sun City man drove a northbound 2014 Volvo semi-truck trailer in the right lane of I-5, a mile south of Highway 140. However, for unknown reasons, it drove across the center median and into the southbound lanes of the highway.
The big rig sideswiped a 2013 Peterbilt semi-truck towing a tanker filled with 8,600 gallons of gasoline. As a result, the tanker rolled over on the right shoulder of 5 Freeway and spilled an unknown amount of gas.
A few moments later, the big rig then crashed head-on with a 2004 Lexus ES330. The 24-year-old Lemoore male driver of the Lexus and another 21-year-old Lemoore male passenger sustained minor injuries. Authorities confirmed that the 21-year-old Lemoore passenger didn’t wear a seat belt.
Meanwhile, Jamee Chargualaf, also a Lexus passenger, reportedly wore a seatbelt. He sustained major injuries and died at the scene.
The 54-year-old Sun City driver of the big rig sustained minor injuries in the vehicle, while the 47-year-old Sacramento man hauling the oil tanker didn’t suffer any injury.
As a result of the crash, authorities shut down the southbound lanes of 5 Freeway during the oil spill cleanup. Caltrans also administered detours through Highway 140 and Highway 33 back to southbound 5 Freeway.
We at Sweet Lawyers offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Jamee Chargualaf. Our deepest thoughts are with them during this difficult time.
