62-Year-Old Male Pronounced Dead after Bakersfield Bicycle Crash near Columbus Street
BAKERSFIELD, CA (March 12, 2020) – Tuesday morning, a 62-year-old man later identified as Ismael Arrenaviz, of Bakersfield was killed in a bicycle accident on Union Avenue.
The incident occurred around 11:40 a.m., near Columbus Street. Dispatchers arrived to the area shortly after.
It was later determined that an unidentified male driver was traveling west on Columbus Street, approaching Union Avenue when he fell asleep. When he woke up, he abruptly veered to avoid traffic while he entered the intersection at a red light.
There, his car then drove onto the sidewalk and eventually struck Arrenaviz, while he was waiting at the corner. The crash left Arrenaviz with fatal injuries. Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle remained uninjured.
Moreover, following the initial impact, another vehicle struck the rear of the involved vehicle. No one sustained injuries in the second collision.
Authorities later evaluated the driver for drug and alcohol intoxication. They determined that he was not under the influence during the collision, and he was eventually released.
Authorities confirmed the identity of the bicyclist on March 10. The accident remains under investigation.
