Gilton Sanitation Worker Crushed by Hydraulic Mechanism of Garbage Truck
RIVERBANK, CA (August 26, 2019) – Authorities identified 30-year-old Ismael Martinez-Huertas of Modesto as the sanitation worker killed in an accident on Homewood Way, Monday afternoon.
According to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened at about 3:32 PM. Due to circumstances still under investigation, Martinez-Huertas got pinned and crushed by a mechanical arm on the truck.
At about 4:22 PM, a passerby noticed the accident and immediately called 911. Deputies arrived and found Martinez-Huertas dead at about 4:26 PM.
Gilton Solid Waste Management continues to investigate the cause of the fatal incident. They suspect that Marinez-Huertas fell in while trying to retrieve a trash can inside the hopper.
Meanwhile, the victim’s wife, Alcira Vega, demands to see surveillance videos nearby and gain answers on how her husband died. In addition, she claimed that her husband had been complaining for the past month about the garbage truck’s faulty arm.
The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health is also investigating the accident. Authorities also noted that Gilton Solid Waste Management has been fined by Cal/OSHA twice in the past three years for work-related fall injuries.
We at Sweet Lawyers offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Ismael Martinez-Huertas. He leaves behind his wife and their two sons. May he rest in peace.
