11-Year-Old Isaiah Bermeo Dead, Irven Jacobs Arrested in Olympia Pedestrian Accident
OLYMPIA, WA (January 27, 2019) – Sunday afternoon, 11-year-old Isaiah Bermeo was struck and killed in a hit-and-run accident on the 101 freeway.
Washington State Patrol reported the accident occurred around 5:30 PM on Highway 101 near Oyster Bay Road Northwest. Bermeo walked away from his home and was walking in the left lane on the highway when he was struck by a vehicle.
Medics arrived shortly after and airlifted the victim to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle due to critical injuries he sustained. The boy succumbed to his injuries and died Wednesday morning.
The day after the incident, detectives located the van believed to be involved in the accident seven miles away from the crash site.
A press conference was held Thursday morning to help identify the suspect as police released his name and photo. In a joint statement, the victims parents Renee and David Paino said his organs will be donated and stated he was a typical 11-year-old boy with a heart of gold.
Wednesday morning State Patrol arrested 51-year-old Irven R. Jacobs from Shelton in connection to the accident. Jacobs called from Nisqually Red Wind Casino in Yelm and surrendered himself to police. He admitted being behind the wheel during the crash.
The suspect was booked into the Thurston County jail and charged with hit and run injury or death. He is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to make preliminary appearance in Thurston County Superior Court.
Sergeant Clint Thomas with State Patrol said there may have been two other people involved in the accident.
