Isabel Yepez Dies After Hit-And-Run Crash on Benito Street in Montclair
Montclair, CA (August 15, 2024) – 18-year-old Isabel Yepez died after a hit-and-run crash on Benito Street.
A memorial filled with flowers, candles, and notes now marks the corner of Benito Street and Central Avenue, where 18-year-old Isabel Yepez was critically injured.
On August 5, Yepez went to check on a friend who was contemplating suicide. According to her friend Evelyn Irene, Yepez left around 5 a.m. and texted her boyfriend at 5:17 a.m., saying she was walking home.
However, Yepez never made it home. Montclair police reported that a hit-and-run driver struck her minutes after she sent the text.
Irene expressed her frustration, saying, “They just left her there. They didn’t try to help or call the police. Someone walking by had to call for help.”
Yepez suffered two broken legs, a broken arm, and is now on life support. Police arrested the driver, 18-year-old Issac Velasquez Panfilo, three hours after the crash.
Court records show that Panfilo was released after pleading not guilty to felony hit-and-run charges. Yepez’s aunt, Joselyn Guerrero, shared her grief, stating, “She would have been alive if he had done the right thing, but instead, he just left her.”
The day after the accident, Yepez’s family made the heart-wrenching decision to remove her from life support.
Guerrero expressed the family’s pain, saying, “We are devastated. We want justice for my niece.” Friends remember Yepez for her kindness and the meals she lovingly prepared. Her longtime friend, Jaslene Orrosquieta, added, “She wanted to be a chef. Her cooking was incredible.”
A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family lay Yepez to rest.
