Isabel Montes Fatally Injured in Salinas Train Crash on Highway 183
SALINAS, CA (September 30, 2019) – A woman identified as Isabel Montes, of Marina, died in a train accident on Wednesday, September 25.
According to California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred near Highway 183 and McFadden Road at around 1:00 p.m.
50-year-old Montes had turned from a private dirt road onto the railroad tracks toward Highway 183, authorities said. However, it is not yet determined if she had stopped or gotten stuck on the tracks, said CHP Officer Michael Orta.
While on the tracks, the train struck her truck, which carried packaging materials for a company, he stated. The force of the crash dislodged the driver’s cabin and tore off the front tires and their axle.
Officers arrived and discovered that the collision had knocked the pickup into a nearby picket fence. There is no other property damage found, he said.
Paramedics pronounced Montes dead at the scene. The Monterey County Coroner’s Office released her identity Thursday.
The incident also caused a fuel leak, which the Monterey County Regional Fire District cleaned up, said Orta.
The train, believed to belong to Union Pacific, stopped several hundred feet to the west. A Union Pacific officer responded to the scene and investigated.
