Marina Woman Dies after Train Hit Her Vehicle on Highway 183 in Salinas
SALINAS, CA (September 25, 2019) – A woman died after a train hit her vehicle while driving on the tracks Wednesday afternoon in Salinas.
The fatal crash happened around 1:12 p.m. on Highway 183 near McFadden Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a Tanimura & Antle flatbed truck was traveling northbound toward Catroville parallel to railroad tracks. The truck turned left from a private dirt road onto the tracks when it was hit by a Union Pacific train.
The impact dislodged the driver’s cabin of the truck and tore off its front tires and axle.
Officers arrived and found the damaged truck into a nearby picket fence. The truck driver died at the scene.
The Monterey County Coroner’s Office identified the victim Thursday as Isabel Montes, 50, of Marina.
The truck nearly hit a house after the crash, but nobody there was injured.
There was a fuel spill as a result of the crash, and crews are working to clean it up.
CHP officials are still investigating the crash to determine the factors involved and liability.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones and friends of Isabel Montes during this delicate time.
