Fatal Accident with Heavy Equipment Grader on 73 Toll Road near Bonita Canyon Drive
IRVINE, CA (April 5, 2018) – A man was fatally injured in an accident involving a heavy equipment grader on State Route 73 toll road between Bison Avenue and Bonita Canyon Drive, early Thursday afternoon.
The fatal collision took place around 1 PM, when a southbound Ford F-250 veered into the center diver and rear-ended a northbound grader. Another SUV that was behind the pickup truck was involved in the crash.
According to CHP Officer Paul Fox, the fuel tank in the truck ruptured, causing a small explosion.
The driver of the SUV was uninjured while the passenger sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for precautionary measures. A 30-year-old man that was driving the truck was pronounced dead on the scene by medical responders. His ID has been withheld, pending notification of his family.
There were paint cans in the back of the truck, that were spilled onto the road from the impact of the collision. Authorities blocked off lanes and nearby on-ramps for investigation and cleanup until around 4 PM. Traffic was diverted through MacArthur Boulevard.
Police officials do not believe that drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the fatal collision. They continue to investigate the cause of the accident, and try and determine whether or not speed was a factor. No other information has been disclosed at this time.
Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased victim involved in this tragic collision.
