1 Killed and 1 Injured in Three-Vehicle Accident near Grand Avenue

WEST COVINA, CA (August 11, 2018) – A 19-year old woman was killed and an 18-year old woman suffered severe blood loss in a two-vehicle collision on 10 Freeway, early Saturday morning. The deceased victim was later identified as 19-year old Irene Aleo of Upland.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at around 2:00 AM in the eastbound lanes of the I-10 just west of Grand Avenue.

The deadly accident began when a 2015 Hyundai Elantra rear-ended a 2014 Toyota Prius. After the crash, the Hyundai was stopped in the No. 1 lane of the freeway and the Prius ended up on the right shoulder. Four occupants in the Hyundai stepped out of the car, before a 1999 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck rear-ended Hyundai. The impact sent the Hyundai eastbound, crashing into three of the car’s occupants as they were standing outside of the vehicle.

Aleo was found lying near the center median and pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. The 18-year old woman had a fractured left femur and was losing a lot of blood when responders arrived, so she had a tourniquet applied on her leg before being rushed to the hospital. The 19-year old male driver of the Hyundai also sustained major injuries to his left leg and a 19-year old male passenger sustained minor injuries. The 53-year-old driver of the Prius and the 44-year-old driver of the Tacoma were not injured. Their names and places of residence were not immediatly disclosed.

Alcohol and drugs are not considered to be involved in the collision but fatigue is believed to have played a role in the initial rear-end crash. The crash closed off the eastbound lanes of 10 Freeway to the public for more than three hours. No additional information has been released to the public at this time.
