Highway 3 DUI Crash Kills Hayfork Man, Injures Irais Hernandez-Mateo and Son
Trinity County, CA (May 11, 2021) – On Monday, a 34-year-old Hayfork man died while 26-year-old Irais Hernandez-Mateo of Santa Cruz, and his son were injured in a head-on crash on Highway 3.
The deadly accident took place at midnight Monday, south of Rourke Ranch Road.
Officers said the Hayfork man in a 2006 Honda was southbound on the highway. However, he crossed the center divider into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
As a result, the front of a 2017 Toyota crashed with the Honda driver’s side.
Unfortunately, the Hayfork man died in the accident.
Meanwhile, the other car’s driver, Hernandez-Mateo suffered major injuries. His five-year-old son sustained minor injuries. Rescuers airlifted both of them to Mercy Medical Center in Redding.
Officers said driving under the influence of alcohol is considered a possible cause of this fatal incident.
