Big Rig Collision Injures Driver, Backs Up Traffic on Highway 50 in Sacramento
SACRAMENTO, CA (March 07, 2019) – Injuries were reported after a collision on Highway 50 near Stockton Boulevard Wednesday morning. The incident, which involved a jackknifed big rig, was reported at 6:25 a.m. according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP said that the axle of the truck fell from Highway 50 onto Stockton Boulevard below, damaging a guardrail and a roadway sign. A man was also said to be lying on the ground in the slow lane following the collision, and an ambulance was dispatched to the scene. Sacramento Fire officials said the driver was transported to a hospital, but the extent of his injuries were unknown.
The collision closed multiple lanes of eastbound Highway 50 for more than four hours, with the truck blocking the lanes until after 7:30 a.m. CalTrans traffic cameras showed that the roadways were reopened just before noon.
Hazmat crews worked to clear the truck and diesel fuel from the roadway. About 60 gallons of diesel spilled out of the big rig. Other debris also flew from the truck and hit a fence, according to CHP.
