Clearlake Auto Accident on Highway 20 and Highway 53
CLEARLAKE, CA (July 2, 2024) – Monday night, an alarming traffic crash on Highway 20 and Highway 53 led to serious injuries.
The crash between a big rig and another vehicle on Highway 20 around mile marker 40 east of Highway 53.
At 5:50 PM, a major incident was reported involving a big rig carrying hay that lost control and crashed into oncoming traffic, resulting in serious injuries. A medevac helicopter has been dispatched, with the landing zone set up at the nearby business, the Oasis.
According to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page, the initial collision occurred when a 53-foot big rig overturned, spilling hay bales across the roadway and triggering a secondary crash. Emergency responders are on-site, and two tow trucks have been called in to assist with clearing the vehicles. One vehicle ended up 50 to 75 feet down an embankment, with its occupant suffering head and shoulder injuries, including bleeding from the head.
Debris is scattered across a dangerous curve, blocking eastbound traffic, while the westbound lane remains open. As of 6:23 PM, efforts to clear the roadway and aid the injured continue. Motorists were advised to avoid the area. Meanwhile, the road remained closed until 7:15 PM to allow for the medical helicopter to land.
