Salinas Valley State Prison Correctional Officer Killed in Car Accident near Chualar River Road
CHUALAR, CA (October 17, 2018) – A man was killed late Wednesday afternoon following a car crash. The victim was later identified as 36-year-old Humberto Ayala, a correctional officer for the Salinas Valley State Prison.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place at about 4:18 PM near Chualar River Road. A big rig that was pulling two trailers attempted to make a left turn to enter an agricultural field.
As the driver crossed the northbound lanes, a 2005 Nissan Altima slammed into the side of the second trailer. The Nissan, driven by Ayala, became wedged underneath the truck and was dragged across the highway towards the east shoulder on the northbound lane.
Ayala suffered critical injuries and was transported to the Natividad Medical Center for treatment. Unfortunately, the officer succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by medical staff. Meanwhile, the truck driver, identified as 63-year-old George Cabrera of Salinas, remained on site and cooperated with investigators.
A GoFundMe page was set up to help Ayala’s family with memorial expenses. Click on the link to donate.
Alcohol and drugs were ruled out as possible contributing factors in the fatal crash, which remains under investigation at this time. Additional information will be released to the public once it becomes available.
We at Sweet Law Group offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Humberto Ayala. He started working for SVSP in February of 2005 and will be remembered as an outstanding officer. May he rest in peace.
