2 Dead in Temple Auto Accident on Interstate 35

TEMPLE, TX (March 12, 2024) – Monday morning, 2 teens died in a horrific stolen vehicle crash on Interstate 35.

The fatal incident happened on Interstate 35, near Buc-ee’s. Reports said that law enforcement was pursuing a stolen Mazda which started in Waco.

Sgt. Washko added that two teenagers were confirmed dead, and two other teens were taken to area hospitals.

The chase began when deputies noticed a burglary in progress, and the suspected burglars escaped. Then, a deputy noticed the suspicious activity about 2 a.m. at a business at 1020 South 5th Street.

Following a tense encounter with law enforcement, a man fled the scene, accelerating at a rapid pace in a bid to evade capture. The pursuit ensued along Interstate 35 southbound until a mishap occurred just north of Troy, where the deputy’s vehicle veered off the road. Subsequently, units from Troy and Bruceville-Eddy took over the chase until the suspect’s vehicle ultimately crashed near Buc-ee’s.

According to DPS Sgt. Washko, the vehicle approached a sharp curve on the southbound service road at an excessive speed, resulting in it careening off the road and flipping multiple times. The occupants, whose identities remained undisclosed, were ejected from the vehicle upon impact. Tragically, a 16-year-old woman and a 17-year-old man were pronounced dead at the scene, while another 16-year-old woman and 17-year-old man sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals.

Fortunately, the deputy involved in the initial crash sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.
