1 Dead in San Diego Pedestrian Accident on State Route 163

SAN DIEGO, CA (July 7, 2024) – Early Saturday, a horrific pedestrian crash on Interstate 5 and State Route 163 killed 1 person.

The incident occurred at about 2:35 a.m. on Interstate 5 and State Route 163.

Reports said that the crash transpired after an ambulance swerved suddenly. Two Marines in a truck noticed the pedestrian but were unable to avoid hitting him. A San Diego police cruiser traveling behind the truck couldn’t stop in time and rear-ended the vehicle in the No. 3 lane. The pedestrian ended up under the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Moreover, the California Highway Patrol, San Diego police, and fire personnel responded to the scene. Also, none of the occupants in the vehicles were injured. 

The freeway was shut down, causing a significant traffic backup that extended beyond 3:15 a.m., with the lanes reopening around 8 a.m.

At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.
