1 Dead in San Ysidro Pedestrian Accident on Interstate 5 near Dairy Mart Road

SAN YSIDRO, CA (December 20, 2023) – Early Tuesday morning, a horrific pedestrian crash on Interstate 5 near Dairy Mart Road killed 1 person.

The incident happened just before 3:15 a.m. on northbound Interstate 5 near Dairy Mart Road, said the California Highway Patrol.

According to CHP officials, an unidentified male pedestrian walking in the lanes was struck by an SUV in the slow lane. As a result, the man was declared dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, the SUV’s driver stayed at the scene following the incident and told CHP officers that he tried to veer out of the way but failed.

CHP officials added that the driver was “traumatized” by the incident. They added that the driver was sober at the time of the incident.

Meanwhile, the crash shut down multiple northbound lanes, causing a traffic backup that reached as far back as the transition from Interstate 805.

At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.
