Bicyclist Killed after Hit-And-Run Crash on West 22nd Street in Tucson

Tucson, AZ (December 29, 2023) – On Wednesday evening, a male cyclist died in a hit-and-run crash on West 22nd Street and South 11th Avenue.

A Tucson Police Department release revealed that, on the evening of Dec. 27, an adult male cyclist succumbed to injuries sustained in a collision with a vehicle that fled the area of West 22nd Street and South 11th Avenue.

Shortly after 6:45 p.m. on Dec. 27, officers responded to a report of a serious-injury collision involving a bicyclist and a vehicle at West 22nd Street and South 11th Avenue. Before their arrival, officers were informed that the involved vehicle had left the area.

The adult male bicyclist was taken to Banner University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Following interviews and an assessment of roadway evidence, detectives concluded that the bicyclist, wearing dark clothing and without a helmet or proper bicycle lighting, was riding northbound on 11th Avenue, crossing 22nd Street, when the suspect vehicle, traveling westbound on 22nd Street, struck him.

Additionally, the bicyclist had narcotic paraphernalia in his possession, although it remains unknown if he had any drugs in his system at the time of the collision.

The primary contributing factors to the collision are the bicyclist’s failure to yield from a stop sign, improper lighting, and the suspect vehicle’s excessive speed.

The ongoing investigation is focusing on the driver who left the scene of the fatal collision.
