Early Morning Pedestrian Crash on 15 Freeway at Oak Hill Road Ends in Fatality
HESPERIA, CA (December 23, 2018) – A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle early Sunday morning on 15 Freeway in Hesperia.
The fatal crash happened around 3:49 a.m. along the southbound lanes of 15 Freeway, just South of Oak Hill Road.
A man wearing a red shirt was reportedly running on the third lane of the freeway. At 4:08 a.m., 911 dispatch received a call from a woman who said she hit a body in the lanes of traffic.
According to initial reports, the pedestrian was struck by multiple vehicles. At least two of the involved vehicles continued driving for several miles and exited at the Highway 138 off-ramp and waited for CHP officers to arrive.
A coroner was dispatched to the scene and pronounced the pedestrian dead. The identity of the victim was not immediately available pending next of kin notification.
The incident prompted officials to issue a SigAlert, blocking all freeway lanes. The closure created a traffic nightmare leaving motorist jammed in gridlock traffic for several hours.
Just before 7:30 am, CalTrans employees started picking up the cones and all lanes were re-opened.
The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.
