Ceres Man Dies in Multi-Vehicle Crash east of River Road
San Joaquin County, CA (September 23, 2024) – Hector Garcia and others were injured in a deadly vehicle crash on State Route 132 Saturday afternoon.
It was approximately 12:57 p.m. when the fatal multi-vehicle crash happened east of River Road in Vernalis.
Investigators said a 26-year-old Ceres man was driving an eastbound 2001 Honda sedan on State Route 132.
Hector Garcia was traveling west in a 2012 Honda SUV on the same freeway. Behind him was Lizandro Castillo in a 2021 Toyota sedan.
Behind Castillo, Esther Yahaira was driving a 2004 Chevrolet van. There was also Abel Velasquez, driving a 2011 Honda behind Yahaira.
CHP officers said the Ceres man turned left and partially crossed the double yellow lines. His vehicle sedan sideswiped Garcia’s SUV and continued driving onto the westbound lane.
The Ceres man’s vehicle collided head-on with Castillo’s Toyota sedan. Yahaira attempted to avoid the collision, but the Honda sedan rea-ended her Chevrolet van.
Responding officers declared the Ceres man deceased at the scene.
Meanwhile, an 11-month-old child riding in a 2021 Toyota sedan was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center with major injuries. Troopers said the little girl was in a child safety seat, but it was facing forward.
Four additional people were injured in the deadly crash.
Subsequently, the authorities have closed SR 132 between River Road and Gates Road while they investigated.
All individuals involved were wearing seat belts. However, is not yet determined if drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.
