Devastating Head-on Crash on Highway 118 Killed 1 Person [Somis, CA]

1 Dead and 4 Injured After Head-On Crash on Highway 118 in Somis

Somis, CA (May 2, 2024) – A head-on crash on Highway 118 west of Balcom Canyon Road killed one driver Thursday afternoon, authorities reported. 

The accident involved four vehicles and occurred shortly after 3:15 p.m. between Somis and Moorpark, injuring four others and shutting down the route for several hours.

California Highway Patrol Officer Ryan Ayers explained that three of the vehicles, a black Ford Raptor pickup truck, a black Honda Civic, and a white Ford Transit-250 van, had been traveling eastbound. 

As traffic slowed, the Raptor and the Civic also reduced their speed. However, the driver of the Ford Transit van was slow to react. 

Attempting to decelerate, the van driver veered left, striking the left rear of the Honda Civic.

The Ford van then crossed into the opposing lane, colliding head-on with an oncoming Toyota Highlander, Ayers stated. 

This initial impact with the Civic caused the Civic to rear-end the Ford Raptor. 

Ventura County firefighters found three people trapped in the Highlander and a fourth in another vehicle, according to Ayers.

Firefighters declared the driver of the Toyota Highlander dead at the scene soon after their arrival. 

They extracted the 43-year-old man from North Hollywood from the wreckage after cutting through the vehicle. His identity has not been released pending notification of his family.

Two passengers in the Highlander, who were helped out of the vehicle, sustained moderate injuries. The drivers of the Raptor and the Civic were mostly uninjured. 

The highway remained closed in both directions for investigation and cleanup until about 8:20 p.m., causing significant traffic delays.

Ayers noted that no arrests were made, and investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. 

The CHP’s Moorpark-area office is investigating the crash.
