Head-On Collision on 5 Freeway [San Ysidro]

Two Hospitalized after Wrong Way Crash in San Ysidro

 
SAN YSIDRO, CA (December 30, 2018) – Two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision Sunday night on 5 Freeway.
 
As per reports the accident occurred around 10:10 PM when a suspected DUI driver sped in the wrong direction on the freeway.
 
Officials stated that a 51-year-old man driving a Chevrolet pickup truck was driving north in the southbound lanes, causing him to smash into a Mitsubishi Lancer driven by a 25-year-old man from San Ysidro. Initial reports indicated that the truck driver may have driven through the port of entry and was being pursued by Border Patrol Agents shortly before the crash occurred.
 
First responders had to extricate both drivers from their vehicles and were then transported to the UCSD Medical Center due to major injuries sustained. Their current medical conditions are unclear at this time.
 
Due to the wreckage, several lanes were blocked and California Highway Patrol Officers closed the southbound lanes for a period of time.
 
The identity of the parties involved has yet to be released.
