Nicola Zaytsez, Gregorio Barrera Injured in Eltopia Car Accident
ELTOPIA, WA (January 30, 2019) – Early Wednesday morning, 46-year-old Gregorio Barrera and 33-year-old Nicola Zaytsev were hospitalized after a semi-truck crash on Highway 395.
Just after 4:00 a.m., Washington State Officials responded to dispatch calls about a serious accident near Milepost 30, just south of Eltopia. Reports indicate that Barrera’s vehicle was gaining speed re-entering the highway from a nearby weigh station, when another semi driven by Zaytsev rear-ended him.
Due to the impact of the collision, both semi-truck drivers were injured and transported to Lourdes Medical Center for treatment. There has been no update on their current condition. One of the two trucks was carrying potato sludge that spilled, resulting in a dangerous and slippery mess on the road.
Following the accident, cars were backed up for miles in the northbound lanes along the highway. The surrounding area was blocked off for over two hours as crews worked on the spill, and finalizing preliminary investigation.
No further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the incident have been disclosed to the public at this time.
According to Washington State Officials, Zaytsev will be charged with 2nd degree negligent driving.
When driving a larger vehicle, make sure the car is up-to-date on inspections and is running well. Big semi-trucks and vans also have poor visibility and more blind spots. Make sure to look twice before turning and always scan the road for other people and cars.
