Fatal Pedestrian Accident on Highway 101 in Gonzales
GONZALES, CA (March 25, 2019) – A man was struck and killed by a car Monday evening in Gonzales, CHP officials said.
The fatal crash happened around 9:10 p.m. along the southbound lanes of Highway 101 at Gloria Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the man attempted to walk across Highway 101 when he was struck by a Volkswagen attempting to drive southbound in the fast lane of Highway 101.
The victim, only described as a Hispanic man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Volkswagen, a college student from San Luis Obispo, observed the pedestrian walking close to his vehicle and could not stop in time to avoid a collision, CHP officials said.
The car was significantly damaged from the crash and there was a post-collision fire of the vehicle.
One southbound lane was closed as police worked to clear the area. All lanes are back open.
Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash but the incident remains under investigation.
