Glenn Bengtsson and Raul Valerio Fatally Injured in La Jolla Paragliding Crash
LA JOLLA, CA (March 14, 2019) – Two men working on their certification died after a mid-air paragliding crash on Saturday, March 9.
Glenn Johnny Peter Bengtsson, 43, of Carlsbad, and Raul Gonzalez Valerio, 61, of Laguna Hills, were the two men killed in the weekend crash. The medical examiner’s office announced their identities Sunday.
The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. near the Torrey Pines Gliderport. Lifeguards said that the two men — both experienced at the sport — apparently collided and then tangled up their parachutes. After that, they fell about 75 feet and crashed into the cliffside.
At about 4 p.m., police confirmed that both men died and they are not flying together.
San Diego Fire-Rescue used a helicopter to recover the bodies because of their position on the cliff, officials stated.
During this time of tragedy, we would like to extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of Glenn Bengtsson and Raul Valerio. We hope they find strength and comfort as they grieve over their loss.
