Willie Hamlin Arrested in Fatal DUI Concord Crash
CONCORD, CA (November 18, 2018) – A man was killed and another one was arrested following a DUI crash Sunday evening in Concord.
The crash happened around 9:26 p.m. on eastbound Highway 4, just west of Willow Pass Road off-ramp.
According to the CHP, a 46-year-old Willie David Hamlin of Antioch was speeding as he approached the off-ramp when he veered to the right and crashed into a guardrail. His Chevrolet Chevelle then veered back left into the lanes of traffic, where it first hit a Nissan Sedan, then the Mitsubishi Lancer.
The driver of the Mitsubishi sedan, a 19-year-old Giovanni Vasquez, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hamlin suffered major injuries and was hospitalized. He remained Monday at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, but his injuries are not life-threatening. He is expected to charged with felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
The driver of the Nissan was not injured severely and walked away from the crash.
The crash closed the far three left lanes of the highway for more than an hour while CHP investigated.
During this moment of grief, we would like to extend our sincere sympathies and thoughts of courage and comfort to the family and friends of Giovanni Vasquez.
