90-Year-Old Santa Barbara Man Fatally Injured When Hit by Car on 500 Block of State Street

SANTA BARBARA, CA (February 24, 2018) – An elderly pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle around 7 PM on the 500 block of State Street in Downtown Santa Barbara.

90-year-old Gilbert William Ramirez of Santa Barbara was walking from east to west in a mid-block crosswalk on Saturday evening, when he was struck by a small SUV that was traveling northbound.

According to reports, the 65-year-old driver was from out of town in a rental car and was distracted by a mapping device at the time of the accident. He wasn’t arrested, but was taken to the Santa Barbara Police Department to be interviewed. His identity has not yet been released to the public.

Ramirez was critically injured and transported to the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and died early Sunday, according to his son Armando Ramirez.

Alcohol does not seem to be a contributing factor in this fatal accident, according to Sgt. Riley Harwood from the Police Department. State St was shut down in the area for investigation; police officials continue to investigate the cause of the incident.

Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Gilbert Ramirez. He was an avid dancer that was well-known and liked in his community. May he rest in peace.
