Stunt Biker Dies in Crash while Trying to Elude Police on 5 Freeway at Terra Bella Street
ARLETA, CA (September 19, 2019) – A motorcyclist died after fleeing from police who attempted to make a traffic violation stop early Thursday morning in Arleta, authorities said.
The incident began around 1:35 a.m. on northbound 5 Freeway at Terra Bella Street.
According to reports, a group of about 10 motorcycles were doing tricks, taking video of their stunts and blocking traffic on the freeway.
Within five minutes, CHP officers arrived and conducted a law enforcement stop on the crew. All but two of the motorcyclists scattered and fled the scene. As the two motorcyclists tried to exit the freeway, one crashed into a barrier, the CHP said.
A news photographer on the scene tried to give the injured motorcyclist CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office identified the motorcyclist as Gerardo Samaniego Jr., 26, of Pacoima.
Officers closed the Terra Bella offramp from the northbound 5 Freeway for about four hours while they conducted their investigation.
