59-Year-Old George Meletis Dead After Bus Crash on 75th Avenue in Phoenix

Phoenix, AZ (October 7, 2024) – Early Monday morning, 59-year-old George Meletis died, and two others sustained injuries in a crash on 75th Avenue and Van Buren Street.

The incident occurred around 5 a.m. at a transit facility near 75th Avenue and Van Buren Street. 

According to Phoenix police, two transit employees had just boarded a small “Circulator” bus and started it, causing the bus to move forward. 

The bus struck both a man standing outside and another bus.

The two employees on the bus were transported to the hospital in critical condition but are expected to survive. 

The man, identified as 59-year-old George Meletis, was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by the bus. 

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, as it remains unclear why the bus moved. 

Despite the incident, no disruptions to the transit system are expected.
