1 Dead and 2 Hurt in Whatcom County Accident on 5 Freeway
WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (July 3, 2020) – Wednesday, Gary Johnson and Ilia Castrejo sustained injuries in a fatal head-on crash on 5 Freeway.
Reports revealed that the crash occurred on July 1st around 8:20 p.m. It took place in the northbound lanes of I-5 between Smith Road and Slater Road.
Moreover, the authorities identified 73-year-old David B. Johnson of Blaine as the sole passenger of a silver 1998 Lexus GS. According to reports, the Lexus traveled south in the northbound lanes during the crash. The authorities pronounced Johnson dead at the scene.
Furthermore, the police said that 75-year-old Gary V. Johnson of Graham WA drove the Lexus. Responders took him to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center unconscious and in critical condition, said WSP Trooper Heather Axtman.
Meanwhile, an 18-year-old Ilia M. Castrejon of Ferndale drove a red 2001 Toyota Camry. She traveled north when the incident happened. As a result, responders took her to PeaceHealth with non-life-threatening injuries.
At this time, the police believe that drugs and/or alcohol played a role in the crash. Moreover, the police confirmed that all the involved parties wore seatbelts during the crash.
Meanwhile, towing services came to the scene to remove the vehicles.
The crash remains under investigation. Furthermore, Axtman revealed that Gary Johnson will face charges on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) and vehicular homicide.
Axtman added that the southbound Lexus drove into the northbound lanes of 5 Freeway at the Main Street interchange. Also, the incident happened just over 1.5 miles away and at freeway speeds.
Due to the collision, the northbound lanes remained closed until 11:30 p.m. while investigators worked at the scene. Moreover, the authorities administered alternate routes off northbound 5 Freeway at the Slater Road interchange during the closure.
